picking a job.....HELP!

Nov. 13th, 2009 | 10:32 am
posted by: [info]womanplus in [info]stage_managers

I haven't felt this much of a dilemma about work things for a long time. So please help:

I agreed to SM the showcase for the grad students I've worked with already. Said showcase pays $425/wk for 6 weeks, from March 29 through May 9th. I signed the contract in JUNE. Perks of this show are: traveling to New York and LA, seeing the final work of the students I've worked with already. Drawbacks: Less money, gives me a 7 week hole in my schedule from Feb. 7th to March 29th (which I still might be able to fill with some other project).

This WEEK I got offered the SM position on the school tour I did last year. Tour pays (if it's the same as last year) $600/wk for 6 weeks, from March 1 to April 11th, with a possible one week extension. Perks of this show: I know all the material already, I had fun last year. Drawbacks: would probably have to get out of the showcase contract, sometimes getting up at 5 AM and doing a show at a school sucks my soul, still leaves me with an awkward 3 week gap in February.

This week I also interviewed for a position SMing a production of Annie at a big non-eq house in the area. It would be my biggest show that I've ever stage managed myself, and they want to do auditions Apr 24-26th. (The SM has to be involved with auditions......it's a thing they do there.) This would conflict with the showcase, but not the tour. I haven't *actually* been offered the job, but the artistic director seemed really interested in me. This show pays about $2200 and has a long rehearsal period over the summer, but is only nights and weekends so I could feasibly get a day job.

So now, what do I do?

some points to consider:
a) I was really looking forward to traveling to New York and LA, and seeing my students all graduated
b) I *HATE* backing out of contracts
c) the school tour pays about $1,000 more than the showcase and doesn't conflict with Annie
d) I haven't actually been offered the Annie show, and the audition dates haven't been set yet anyway
e) where the hell am I going to work in February and March?

options:
a) do the showcase, you signed the contract ages ago and it would be really sad to back out of it; just look for another show to do in Feb/March
b) back out of the showcase, do the tour, and use the extra money to go to New York and LA on your own
c) since the showcase production manager said the rehearsal/dates weren't flexible, see if the dates of the school tour are flexible
d) do you *really* want to do Annie? *REALLY?!?!*

General question: how much of a difference in pay is acceptable to use as a reason to back out of a contract?

and: is it even appropriate to ask if they could adjust the dates of the school tour?

US: Petition to Senator Reid in Opposition to Stupak Amendment

Nov. 11th, 2009 | 01:50 pm

From NARAL:

Hi -

I'm pretty angry that the House passed an anti-choice measure that would essentially eliminate insurance coverage for abortion in the new system. Health reform is important, but no one should lose coverage in the new system.

I just signed a petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asking him to stand strong against a similar attack in the Senate. Will you add your name? The deadline is 12 noon (EST) on Friday, November 13.

From NARAL and the House:

Attention Michigan residents: Rep. Stupak, he of the anti-choice Stupak-Pitts amendment "fame," is holding a townhall today.

Here are the details:

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM (EST)
Bay de Noc Community College
Besse Center
2001 North Lincoln Rd
Escanaba, MI
(Map It)
From Rep. Stupak's press release:

U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) will host a town hall meeting in Escanaba on Wednesday, November 11, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. (EST) at Bay de Noc Community College's Besse Center. The meeting is open to the public and will provide an opportunity for constituents to ask Stupak questions on a range of issues, including health care and the economy. Stupak will also provide an update on his work in Congress.

The Besse Center is located at 2001 North Lincoln Rd, Escanaba, Mich.

"This is an opportunity to speak with constituents, answer their questions, and address their concerns about the critical issues currently impacting Northern Michigan, including the health care bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives this past weekend," Stupak said. "I look forward to engaging in a respectful, civil dialogue on a broad range of issues. I enjoy hearing from constituents and the ideas and feedback I receive at town hall meetings, and through the letters, emails, faxes and telephone calls to my offices is valuable to me personally and is critical to the work I do in Congress."

Out of respect for all those wishing to attend the town hall meeting only credentialed media will be permitted to record the event. Signs, banners and posters will not be allowed inside the center.
If you live near Escanaba, Michigan... this would be a good opportunity for you to tell Rep. Stupak what you think about his anti-choice amendment.

And might I also suggest you sign our petition calling on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to stand firm against a ban on abortion coverage for women in the new health system? Thanks!

US: How Bad is The Stupak Anti-Abortion Amendment in Congress?

Nov. 7th, 2009 | 03:43 pm
mood: disgusted
posted by: [info]pandapajamas in [info]ljforchoice

From the Washington Post, as relayed via DailyKOS.

"Because of the limits placed on the exchanges, most of the participants will have some form of premium credit or affordable subsidy. That means most will be ineligible for abortion coverage. The idea that people are going to go out and purchase separate "abortion plans" is both cruel and laughable. If this amendment passes, it will mean that virtually all women with insurance through the exchange who find themselves in the unwanted and unexpected position of needing to terminate a pregnancy will not have coverage for the procedure. Abortion coverage will not be outlawed in this country. It will simply be tiered, reserved for those rich enough to afford insurance themselves or lucky enough to receive from their employers."

The amendment is expected to pass with relative ease. Republicans will join with anti-choice Democrats to push it over the finish line. Once the amendment passes, the bill is cleared for a vote, and all parties expect that vote to succeed. Today looks likely to end with a historic, and important, vote. A vote that is a first step towards helping more than 30 million people secure health-care coverage, and making sure hundreds of millions are better protected from the vagaries of the insurance industry. But Stupak's amendment is a bitter start. It is, however, not the end. Even if it muscles into the House bill, it will also have to pass in the Senate, and then survive conference, before it becomes law.

My note: Even the most ardent, supposed "feminist" politicians have stated they are willing to vote to allow this amendment to stand, as long as they can pass the reform today.

This is PATHETIC. And we have a Democratic majority in both the House and Senate who can't seem to buck up and get a spine, so I dunno folks. What do YOU think is the best way to deal with this grassroots style?

Please forward widely!

Representatives agreed to allow an Up or Down Vote TODAY to create
what would essentially become a "de facto ban" on abortion services
for private as well as potential public insurers. This is outrageous
